Ability Board approves Disability Equality Scheme

4/12/2007

The Board of Ability has approved a new scheme for Disability Equality that is now available for download on this site. The scheme sets out a vision for equality within Ability as an organisation without barriers, where people with impairments can participate and contribute fully and equally with their non-impaired peers.

Nazlee Aziz, a Board member at Ability has been appointed as 'disability equality champion' for the organisation. She says "I see my role as ensuring that disability equality is treated as a business priority by the Board. I aim to ensure that the Board always considers the impact of its decisions on disability equality for customers, staff and the wider public".

David Williams, Chief Executive said "our vision is for an organisation without barriers, where all people, regardless of ability or impairments can participate and contribute fully. However, we recognise still the existence of some barriers within our organisation, whether they are environmental or attitudinal, that prevent the realisation of our vision. This scheme and its associated action plan begins a systematic and continual process of identifying and removing those barriers".

The scheme was approved by the Board on 28th November 2007 following extensive consultation and involvement of disabled tenants and service users, staff and Board members. Nearly 100 tenants and service users attended the recent conference at which they were invited to submit their comments and suggestions for measures to improve disability equality.
